A press conference was held today by the central committee of Bru Songrangma Motho Organization at the residence of Birchandra Manu Cross Niranjan Riang in Shantir Bazar subdivision, demanding a full government holiday for the state-level Riang community festival and fair. This comes after the Chief Minister had assured full holiday, but the government officially declared only a limited holiday.

The Riang community, the second-largest tribal group in the state, predominantly follows Hinduism. Every year, during the Amavasya of Bhadra month, the community performs the state-level Songrangma Devi Puja at Birchandra Manu Dakkhal Sing Riang Para, which is accompanied by a fair that fosters unity and cultural harmony among different communities.

This year, the festival and fair were inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Professor Dr. Manik Saha, who acknowledged the significance of the event and expressed agreement to declare a full holiday during the Amavasya of Bhadra month, as informed by Khnaram Riang, General Secretary of Bru Songrangma Motho Social Organization.

However, Khnaram Riang stated that despite the Chief Minister’s assurance, the government declared only a limited holiday. The organization, through this press conference, has appealed to the Chief Minister and the government to reconsider and officially announce a full holiday for the festival.

Members of the Riang community expressed hope that the state government, committed to public welfare, will acknowledge their demand and grant a full holiday for this culturally significant festival.
