Hollywood, Oct 6, 2025:
The legendary sword-and-sorcery heroine Red Sonja returns to the big screen in a 2025 reboot, directed by M. J. Bassett and starring Matilda Lutz in the titular role. The film had a theatrical release in the U.S. on August 13, 2025, with digital/VOD release scheduled for August 29, 2025.
Based on the iconic character originally created by Robert E. Howard and popularized in comics by Roy Thomas, the movie follows Sonja, a young warrior from Hyrkania, whose homeland is destroyed by invading forces. Forced into exile, she must survive deadly gladiatorial battles, reclaim her freedom, and confront the tyrannical Emperor Dragan and the antagonist Dark Annisia.
The film’s ensemble cast also includes Wallis Day, Robert Sheehan, Michael Bisping, Martyn Ford, Veronica Ferres, and Rhona Mitra. The production was handled by Millennium Media, Cinelou Films, and Nu Boyana Studios, with a runtime of approximately 110 minutes.
Critics have given mixed reviews, praising the action sequences and fantasy world-building while pointing out challenges with CGI and pacing. The reboot also pays attention to Sonja’s iconic armor, modernizing it while retaining the classic aesthetic.
Fans of fantasy action films and comic adaptations have welcomed the release, while some critics debate its comparison with the 1985 cult classic starring Brigitte Nielsen.
Distribution: The film is available in theaters across the U.S. and will soon be accessible through VOD platforms. UK and Ireland audiences can expect a theatrical release later in 2025.
