A strong magnitude 5.7 earthquake shook large parts of Bangladesh on 21 November 2025, causing deaths, injuries, and widespread panic across multiple districts. The tremor was felt most intensely in the capital Dhaka, as well as Narsingdi, Gazipur, and surrounding central regions.

According to disaster response officials, the quake struck at around 10:38 a.m., with its epicenter located in the Madhabdi area of Narsingdi district, roughly 40 kilometers east of Dhaka. The sudden jolt forced thousands of people out of homes, offices, schools, and factories.

Casualties and Injuries

Preliminary reports from local authorities indicate that:

  • Multiple people lost their lives after being hit by collapsing railings, falling objects, and damaged structures.

  • Hundreds were injured, many while trying to rush out of buildings in fear.

  • A large number of injuries were reported from garment factories in Gazipur, where workers stampeded toward narrow exits.

Hospitals in Narsingdi and Dhaka received a steady flow of injured individuals, including several in critical condition.

Property Damage

The earthquake caused:

  • Cracks in government offices, schools, and residential buildings, particularly in Narsingdi.

  • Swaying of high-rise buildings in Dhaka, forcing emergency evacuations.

  • Damage to industrial units, including disruptions at a major power facility in Ghorashal, where a small fire broke out soon after the tremor.

Many residents reported that household items fell off shelves, and older buildings developed visible structural damage.

Government Response

Authorities activated emergency control rooms shortly after the quake, instructing local administrations to begin rapid assessments and provide immediate assistance.

The interim government appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid spreading misinformation. Disaster management teams and engineers have been deployed to inspect unsafe buildings and restore damaged services.
