Security personnel in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district carried out a major crackdown on illegal poppy cultivation on December 1, destroying a total of 54 acres of farmland used for the illicit crop.

The first operation was conducted between Khoiripok and Sehjang villages under the jurisdiction of the New Keithelmanbi Police Station. During this drive, forces cleared 18 acres of poppy fields and dismantled five temporary huts used by cultivators. Officials also seized and destroyed a range of materials found at the site, including fertiliser, spray pumps, and other chemicals believed to be used in the cultivation process.

A separate joint operation involving security forces and the Forest Department was carried out in the C. Lamjang hill range and nearby areas under Kangpokpi Police Station. This action resulted in the destruction of another 36 acres of poppy plantations. Teams on the ground dismantled 11 huts and disposed of 14 bags of fertiliser and 9 bags of salt, reportedly used to support the cultivation.

Authorities noted that both locations showed signs of organised efforts to sustain the illegal crop, with huts and agricultural supplies set up to aid continuous production. The materials were removed as part of a broader strategy to curb poppy cultivation in the region.

No details have been released regarding arrests or suspects, but officials indicated that anti-poppy operations will continue as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate illegal cultivation in Kangpokpi district.
