Transport Unions Give 72-Hour Deadline to Police, Warn of Larger Agitation

Two transport unions in Tripura — the Sipahijala Bus-Jeep Drivers’ Association and the Sonamura–Agartala Bus Owners’ Association, both under the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh — have given the police 72 hours to arrest those involved in the August 5 Bishramganj bus vandalism and passenger attack. Separate FIRs were filed, and the unions warned that if no arrests are made within the deadline, they will approach the Transport Minister and Chief Minister to launch a larger agitation.

The Sipahijala Tripura Bus-Jeep Drivers’ Association and the Sonamura–Agartala Bus Owners’ Association, both affiliated with the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS), have issued a 72-hour deadline to the district police administration to arrest those responsible for the August 5 night attack at Bishramganj market.

On Thursday afternoon, union leaders — including Biplab Majumdar, Sajal Kumar Deb, Yusuf Mia Panna Gan, and affected bus owner Swapan Chandra Saha — lodged separate cases at Bishramganj Police Station. They then met Sipahijala Superintendent of Police Vijay Debbarma and formally set the 72-hour deadline.

The unions demanded the arrest of all individuals involved in vandalising buses and attacking passengers during the Bishramganj violence. They warned that if arrests are not made within the set timeframe, they will escalate the matter to the Transport Minister and the Chief Minister, and launch a larger agitation under the BMS banner.

Speaking to the media, the leaders stressed that the attack caused heavy losses to vehicle owners and endangered passengers’ lives. They added that the next course of action will depend on whether police can apprehend the accused within the stipulated period.
