Khowai, Sept 21:
In a major operation, police in Khowai district detained seven Bangladeshi nationals from the Sombaira Bazar area near Asharam Bari along the international border on Sunday evening.
According to police sources, the incident took place at around 7 PM when a team intercepted an auto-rickshaw traveling from Asharam Bari towards Khowai town. The vehicle was stopped for routine checking at Sombaira Bazar. During questioning, the seven passengers failed to produce valid documents. On further interrogation, they admitted to being residents of Bangladesh.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the detainees had illegally crossed the Asharam Bari international border into Indian territory and were attempting to travel to Agartala. They were immediately taken to Champahaor Police Station, where intensive questioning is underway.
Police officials confirmed that legal proceedings will be initiated against the detained Bangladeshi citizens as per the relevant sections of Indian law concerning illegal infiltration and border security.
This incident once again highlights the challenges faced by security agencies in monitoring infiltration through vulnerable border areas in Tripura. Authorities are on high alert to prevent such cross-border movements, which often pose both security and administrative concerns for the state.
