While Russian air defense systems intercepted most of the incoming strikes, several drones managed to breach defenses, impacting residential buildings and hitting the Moscow Oil Refinery in Kapotnya. Ukraine has unleashed its largest drone attack on the Russian capital region since the conflict began, launching a massive strike that targeted key energy infrastructure and residential areas. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated that Russian air defense systems intercepted approximately 450 drones heading directly toward the capital. Overall, regional defenses reported downing over 1,600 drones across the territory since Saturday.
Despite interception efforts, several drones breached defenses, striking the Moscow Oil Refinery in the Kapotnya district and causing damage to key operating units. Regional Governor Andrei Vorobyov confirmed that at least three people were killed and over 20 were injured after drones impacted residential structures, including a multi-story apartment building in Sofyino.
The attack disrupted air traffic across the capital, forcing major hubs—including Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo airports—to temporarily halt arrivals and departures. Mayor Sobyanin characterized the operation as a deliberate attempt to disrupt the ongoing Russian parliamentary elections, though he assured the public that emergency services quickly contained the situation.
