A powerful explosion destroyed a two-storey building in the historic Plaka district of Athens, Greece, on Friday, September 25, leaving at least four people dead and two others missing, according to the latest reports.
The building was located near the Acropolis, one of Athens’ major tourist attractions. Part of the property reportedly operated as a short-term holiday rental, while an elderly couple lived on the upper floor.
Rescue teams have been searching through the rubble for people who may have been trapped inside. Firefighters have recovered several bodies, while the identities of some victims were still being confirmed. Earlier reports said two women were rescued from a neighbouring building and taken to hospital. A passerby was also reportedly injured.
Authorities are investigating the cause of the explosion. A gas leak has been considered a possible explanation, but officials have not confirmed the cause.
The blast damaged nearby buildings, vehicles and a church, prompting emergency services to secure the area and assess surrounding structures for safety.
