Student Allegedly Assaulted Over Theft Dispute in Silachari
A Class XI student, Hori Kumar Tripura, was allegedly assaulted in Silachari following a dispute over an alleged money theft. His family claims he was taken to a Karbari and pressured to accept the allegation before being allegedly beaten, suffering injuries to his hand and leg. Silachari, Karbook: A case of alleged assault involving a Class XI student has come to light in Master Para, Silachari, under the Karbook Sub-Division, following a dispute over an alleged theft.
According to information provided by the student's family, on 7 September Rojin Chakma was allegedly accused of stealing money and reportedly named Prasanjit Tripura, a Class XI student and son of Hori Kumar Tripura, as being involved with him. Following the allegation, villagers from Master Para under Karbari Umakanta Dewan allegedly took Hori Kumar Tripura to the Karbari and asked him to accept that he had jointly stolen the money with Rojin Chakma.
The family claims that Hori Kumar Tripura did not accept the allegation. It is further alleged that villagers subsequently assaulted him, resulting in injuries to his hand and leg. His guardian then reportedly took him first to Khowaiphang Hospital and later to Santirbazar Hospital for medical treatment.
The family has since filed an FIR at Silachari Police Station, reportedly registered as Case No. 2026/14, seeking investigation into the alleged assault and circumstances surrounding the incident.
The family has also raised questions about the manner in which Hori Kumar Tripura was allegedly taken from his home to the Karbari. They claim that the matter should have been handled through the lawful authorities and have questioned whether the concerned Roaja was informed before the student was taken.
Under Indian criminal law, physical assault causing injuries can attract provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Section 115 deals with voluntarily causing hurt, while Section 117 concerns voluntarily causing grievous hurt; a fracture or dislocation of a bone is specifically included within the statutory definition of grievous hurt.
The BNS also contains provisions concerning wrongful restraint and wrongful confinement under Sections 126 and 127, although the applicability of any particular provision would depend on the facts established during investigation.
The Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, provides the procedure for recording information relating to cognizable offences and police investigation under Sections 173 and 175.
The family of Hori Kumar Tripura has demanded that the authorities look into the matter properly, establish the facts, identify those responsible if the allegations are substantiated, and ensure appropriate legal action.
The allegations remain subject to police investigation, and the response of the concerned Karbari, Roaja and other parties involved is awaited.
