Tripura Employees to Get Central-Level DA Soon, Confirms CM Dr. Manik Saha

In a major development for state government employees, Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha has declared that the state government is seriously considering reducing the disparity in Dearness Allowance (DA) between state and central government employees.

Currently, state employees in Tripura receive 33% DA, while their central counterparts enjoy a higher 53%. The wide gap has long been a concern among state government workers, who argue that the rising cost of living affects them just as much as it does central staff.

Addressing a press gathering at the Civil Secretariat on Wednesday, Dr. Saha acknowledged the issue and stated:

“We are aware of the DA disparity and how it affects the morale of our employees. The state government is examining the matter seriously and we are planning to increase the DA to bring it closer to central government standards.”

The move, if implemented, will benefit over 1.8 lakh state government employees and pensioners in Tripura. However, the CM also hinted at fiscal constraints, given the limited revenue base of the northeastern state. He emphasized the importance of financial discipline and added that any decision would be made keeping the overall budgetary balance in mind.

Why DA Matters

Dearness Allowance is a cost-of-living adjustment given to government employees and pensioners. It is revised periodically to offset inflation. The difference in DA rates between the Centre and states has often led to demands for parity.

Background

Tripura's DA revision history has been cautious due to financial limitations. In recent years, increments have been announced sporadically, but the 20% gap with the Centre has remained largely unchanged.

Employee Reaction

State employee associations have welcomed the CM’s statement but have urged for time-bound action.
“We appreciate the CM’s intent, but what we need is a roadmap with deadlines. We hope the promise doesn’t remain on paper,” said a representative from the Tripura Government Employees’ Federation.

What’s Next?

The Finance Department is expected to submit a feasibility report on the proposed DA hike within the next few weeks. A Cabinet discussion may follow before an official announcement.
