Tension in Hezamara: TIPRA Motha Protests Arrest of Party Workers, Demands Fair Investigation

A political clash erupted in Tripura’s Hezamara area on September 21 during a BJP clothing distribution event, where the ruling party alleged that TIPRA Motha workers carried out an attack. Police later arrested two Motha members following the complaint. After the incident, Sidhai Police Station’s OC Himadri Sarkar was transferred and one SI suspended. TIPRA Motha leaders have since submitted a deputation demanding that their FIR be registered and the real culprits arrested. EM Rabindra Debbarma criticized the police action and questioned why officers were removed mid-investigation, emphasizing that despite being a government ally, TIPRA Motha is being denied justice.

On September 21, ruling party leaders alleged that TIPRA Motha party workers attacked a BJP clothing distribution event held at the Hezamara Multipurpose Community Hall. Following the incident, the ruling party lodged a formal complaint at Sidhai Police Station, leading to a case being registered. Police later arrested two TIPRA Motha workers in connection with the incident.

Subsequently, Sidhai Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Himadri Sarkar was transferred, and another Sub-Inspector (SI) was suspended. In response, TIPRA Motha leaders submitted a deputation to the newly appointed Officer-in-Charge at Sidhai Police Station today.

According to Motha party leaders, on September 21 at Hezamara Bazar, two of their party workers were allegedly attacked and injured by members of the BJP’s Janajati Morcha (tribal wing). The injured workers were later treated at the Hezamara Primary Health Centre.

The TIPRA Motha party claimed that, despite filing a complaint regarding the assault, Sidhai Police refused to register their case and instead arrested two innocent Motha workers.

Executive Member (EM) of the Education Department, Rabindra Debbarma, demanded that their case be registered and the real offenders be arrested. He further questioned why one officer was transferred and another suspended, stating that the true facts would have emerged if the same officers were allowed to continue the investigation.

Expressing his resentment, Debbarma said, “Even though we are an ally of the government, why are we being denied justice?” He also mentioned that the statement made by Bipin Debbarma was not undemocratic and should not have been misinterpreted.
