Karbook, Gomati District, Tripura – July 6, 2025:
In a surprising and rare sight, giant bamboo shoots weighing a total of 19 kg and 700 grams and measuring 6.5 feet in length were spotted for the first time in the Karbook sub-division of Gomati district. The extraordinary bamboo shoots were brought to Jalaya Bazar, under Pati Chari Panchayat, by a local shopkeeper Asitu Mog, creating quite a buzz across the region.

Priced at ₹50 per kilogram, the bamboo shoots quickly became a hot topic of conversation in local markets and on social media, with numerous photos and videos going viral. Shoppers and passersby gathered in large numbers to witness the rare giant bamboo, with many expressing amazement at its unusual size and reportedly sweet taste.

According to local sources, the bamboo was planted in Joy Chandra Para, and the owner is believed to have brought the plant from outside the state—or possibly even from another country. The plant has flourished in the local soil, producing bamboo shoots that far exceed the usual size seen in the region.

“This is the first time we’ve seen something like this in our area,” said Asitu Mog. “People are shocked and excited. Some even tasted the bamboo shoot and said it was sweeter than normal varieties.”

Agricultural experts and local authorities are now taking interest in the phenomenon, with some suggesting the bamboo could be a rare hybrid or exotic species. If proven viable, this could open new opportunities for high-value bamboo cultivation in Tripura, a state already rich in natural forest resources.

The incident has left the Karbook region buzzing with curiosity and pride, with many locals now eager to learn more about the giant bamboo and its origins.
