Tripura
In a major breakthrough in Tripura’s ongoing fight against narcotics, Kalyanpur Police carried out a high-impact operation that led to the arrest of seven members of an interstate drug smuggling racket. The group was caught red-handed with 20 kilograms of dry cannabis (ganja) during a routine vehicle checking late Saturday night in the R.S. Para area.
Acting on vigilance and routine inspection, the police intercepted a white Eco vehicle (Reg. No. TR01CC0276) and conducted a thorough search. What followed was a significant seizure—20 kg of contraband cannabis—and the immediate arrest of the seven individuals involved in the trafficking operation.
Of the seven arrested, six are residents of Bhagalpur district in Bihar:
The driver of the vehicle, Gautam Debbarma (35), is a local from Lefunga in Tripura, suspected to be the key regional link for the drug route.
During preliminary interrogation, all accused confessed to their involvement in the illegal drug trade, admitting they were transporting the consignment in exchange for money.
The police have filed a case under the NDPS Act and, after completion of legal formalities, all the accused were produced before the Khowai District Court.
A senior officer from Kalyanpur Police Station stated,
“We are committed to making Tripura drug-free. This operation is a warning to all those who think they can turn our state into a narcotics corridor. No one will be spared.”
This arrest underscores a disturbing trend of Tripura being targeted as a transit route for narcotics smuggling. However, with vigilant law enforcement and such crackdowns, authorities are hopeful that the tide is turning. The public has lauded the Kalyanpur Police for their swift action and dedication in restoring safety and order.
