Dubai / New Delhi, 21 November 2025 — Wing Commander Namansh Syal, a decorated pilot of the Indian Air Force (IAF), died on Friday after his HAL Tejas fighter jet crashed during a demonstration flight at the Dubai Air Show.

According to officials, the crash occurred when Syal was performing a low-altitude aerobatic manoeuvre near Al Maktoum International Airport. The aircraft suddenly lost control and went down, bursting into flames upon impact. Emergency teams responded immediately, but the pilot could not be rescued.

Wing Commander Syal was born in Patialakad village, Nagrota Bagwan tehsil, Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Public records indicate he was born in 1991. Multiple reports place his age between 34 and 37 at the time of his death. He is survived by his wife — also an officer in the Indian Air Force — their young daughter, and his parents.

The Indian Air Force has ordered a court of inquiry to determine the cause of the crash, which occurred during one of the world’s most prestigious international aviation events.

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing Syal as “a courageous and dutiful son of India.” Tributes have also poured in from defence officials, serving personnel, and former colleagues.

Wing Commander Syal’s death has sent shockwaves through his hometown and the defence community. The tragedy highlights the significant risks undertaken by display pilots, who push aircraft to their limits to represent the nation on the global stage.
