Bishramganj police have arrested a man named Sukumar Banik, a resident of Chandranagar in Bishalgarh, on charges of molesting a female passenger aboard a moving bus. The arrest took place late Wednesday night under direct instructions from Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha.
According to police, the 18-year-old victim, a student returning from Guwahati, alleged that a co-passenger behaved inappropriately with her during the journey between Bishalgarh and Bishramganj. Soon after the complaint, a joint team from the Crime Branch, Sepahijala district administration, and Bishalgarh Police took Banik into custody.
Following the incident, unrest broke out in Bishramganj. A group of people attacked the bus involved in the case, damaging vehicles and nearby shops. At least six people were reported injured. Authorities responded by imposing a 24-hour restriction on public gatherings under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) to prevent further violence.
Banik was presented before the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Court on Thursday afternoon.
