Agartala, Tripura: Ahead of the upcoming TTAADC Village Committee Election 2026, political activity has intensified across Tripura. Campaigns, meetings and promises are increasing every day, and one humorous question is now being discussed among voters: “Exactly how many people are going to become Chairman?”
The State Election Commission has announced elections in 587 Village Committees, covering 2,634 constituencies and 4,597 seats across 52 of Tripura's 58 RD Blocks. Polling is scheduled for September 28, 2026, with counting on October 5, 2026. More than 9.61 lakh voters are eligible to participate.
According to the legal structure of the Village Committees, every VC has its own Chairman and Vice-Chairman, elected from among the elected VC members. In simple terms, there cannot be multiple Chairmen for the same Village Committee. The law provides for the office of the Chairman and the Vice-Chairman in each Village Committee.
However, as election campaigning gains momentum across the TTAADC areas, political promises and expectations have created a funny situation. From Karbook to Killa, Amarpur to Silachari, and across the other 52 poll-bound RD Blocks, supporters may hear promises and political assurances about leadership positions.
This has led to a light-hearted public joke: “There are 587 VCs, so there can be 587 VC Chairmen—but if every leader promises the Chairman post to every supporter, Tripura may soon have more Chairmen than Village Committees!”
The 2026 VC election is being held across all eight districts in the TTAADC-covered election areas, including North Tripura, Unakoti, Dhalai, Khowai, West Tripura, Sepahijala, Gomati and South Tripura. With 1,550 polling stations and thousands of candidates and supporters expected to be involved, political competition is expected to be intense.
For now, the election has not yet decided who will become Chairman. The voters will first elect the VC members, and the elected members will then choose the Chairman according to the prescribed process. So, until the final political process is completed, the growing number of “future Chairmen” remains one of Tripura's funniest election-season discussions!
