Tipra Motha Files FIR Against Facebook Page for Defamation and Misinformation Targeting Bubagra
TIPRA Motha filed an FIR with the Gomati SP on December 1 against the Facebook page “Tripura Public Opinion News” for allegedly posting defamatory and false content targeting Maharaja Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma (Bubagra). The party claimed the page published a misleading post accusing Bubagra of inciting a theft, which TIPRA Motha called completely fabricated and aimed at damaging his reputation. The FIR cites charges under IPC Sections 499, 500, 505(1)(b), 505(2), 153A, along with provisions of the IT Act, 2000. Police are expected to begin investigation into the source and intent of the post.
The TIPRA Motha Party has lodged a formal FIR with the Gomati Superintendent of Police against a Facebook page named “Tripura Public Opinion News”, accusing it of spreading defamatory and fabricated content against Hon’ble Maharaja Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma (Bubagra), the founder of the party.
According to the complaint submitted by TIPRA Motha leaders, the Facebook page published a misleading and malicious post aimed at tarnishing Bubagra’s reputation. The post carried the caption:
“ক্যায়া হো গায়া থানসা? প্রমুখের উস্কানির পর ট্রাফিকের সিগন্যাল স্ট্যান্ড নিয়ে পালালো। তারপর 1644641 #agartala”
TIPRA Motha stated that the claim—suggesting that Maharaja Pradyot Bikram Manikya allegedly incited someone to steal a traffic signal stand, leading to detention—is completely false and intended to mislead the public.
The party emphasised that the post amounts to criminal defamation, deliberate provocation, and an attempt to create social unrest.
The FIR cites violations under the following sections:
-
IPC Sections 499 & 500 – Defamation
-
IPC Sections 505(1)(b) & 505(2) – Making false statements and promoting public mischief
-
IPC Section 153A – Attempt to promote disorder and tensions
-
Relevant sections of the Information Technology Act, 2000
TIPRA Motha leaders said the post was circulated “with malicious intent” and urged the police to take strict legal action against the administrators of the page. The party also stated that spreading misinformation about the Maharaja not only harms his public image but also misleads the people of Tripura.
The Gomati Police are expected to investigate the origin and intent of the online post as part of the FIR.
