Khowai Court Hands 10-Year Jail Term to Two in Ganja Smuggling Case
Two accused, Partha Debnath and Bijesh Debbarma, have been convicted in a 79-kg ganja smuggling case by the Khowai District Court. Khowai, Tripura: Two men have been convicted and sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment by the Khowai District Court in a ganja smuggling case dating back to 2021. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh each on the two convicts.
According to the case details, police intercepted and searched a vehicle at the Hawaibari naka point under Teliamura Police Station on July 9, 2021. The search led to the recovery of 79 kg of ganja from the vehicle.
The driver, Partha Debnath, and co-driver, Bijesh Debbarma, were arrested following the recovery.
The case was later placed before the court of Special Judge Sharmistha Mukherjee at the Khowai District Court. Over the course of the trial, statements from 12 witnesses were recorded, while the court examined the available documents and other evidence.
After a detailed assessment of the evidence, the court convicted both accused.
The court subsequently ordered both Partha Debnath and Bijesh Debbarma to undergo 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. Each was also directed to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh.
The judgment highlights the courts' firm approach toward cases involving illegal drug trafficking and cannabis smuggling.
