US President Donald Trump marked Independence Day with a dramatic show of military power as B-2 stealth bombers, accompanied by F-35 and F-22 fighter jets, flew over the White House on Friday. Watching from the White House balcony alongside First Lady Melania Trump, Trump used the occasion to sign his controversial tax and spending legislation into law.

Dubbed the "One Big Beautiful Bill," the legislation represents a sweeping reconfiguration of US economic policy, combining large tax cuts with significant spending reductions. Flanked by Republican lawmakers, Trump declared, “America is winning, winning, winning like never before.”

Despite criticism from Democrats—and even some Republicans—that the law will deepen inequality and increase the deficit by an estimated $3.4 trillion over ten years, Trump dismissed the concerns. “You won’t even notice it,” he said, referring to the cuts to social welfare programs like Medicaid and federal food assistance. Analysts estimate that up to 17 million people may lose health insurance, and many rural hospitals could shut down.

The signing ceremony capped two weeks of perceived victories for Trump, including a ceasefire deal between Iran and Israel following US airstrikes. Pilots involved in those operations were honored at a White House picnic for military families.

Trump praised House Speaker Mike Johnson for securing the narrow 218–214 passage of the bill in the House, overcoming party divisions. Meanwhile, tech billionaire Elon Musk, once a Trump ally, condemned the legislation and announced plans to form a new political party.

Democrats have vowed to make the bill a central issue in the 2026 midterm elections, calling it a massive shift of wealth from poor Americans to the wealthy.

Public reactions at Washington’s July 4th parade were mixed. “Yesterday was a horrible day, today is the best part of America,” said 70-year-old Elisabeth Hubir.
