Udaipur: A late-night road accident in Udaipur's Dhajanagar Police Line Chowmuhani area triggered tension after an allegedly speeding Maruti Eeco crashed into a roadside temporary shop and a motorcycle on Saturday night.

The vehicle, reportedly travelling towards Bagmara from Udaipur, lost control near the Agartala-Sabroom National Highway. Following the accident, local residents reportedly intercepted the vehicle and detained the occupants.

During a subsequent search, an airgun and a sharp weapon were reportedly found inside the vehicle. The discovery led to heightened concern among local residents, following which police from R.K. Pur Police Station arrived at the scene.

Two youths were detained in connection with the incident. Police identified them as Krishan Jamatia, 26, and Anar Jamatia, 31. They were taken to the police station and reportedly sent for medical examination.

Investigators are now trying to establish why the weapons were allegedly being carried in the vehicle, where they came from and whether they have any connection with the road accident. Police are also examining whether the firearm-like object is an airgun and whether its possession was lawful.

The incident comes against the backdrop of the recent ADC Village Committee election-related tensions, including the reported shooting of Tipra Motha candidate Khachang Reang at Warengbari during polling on September 28 and the subsequent re-poll.

With counting and result declaration scheduled for October 5, the recovery of weapons from a vehicle shortly before counting has raised questions locally. However, authorities have not confirmed any link between the incident and the election, and the matter remains under investigation.
