Rs 40 Lakh Cash Seized During Naka Checking in Kamalpur, Five Detained

Kamalpur: Police seized cash amounting to Rs 40 lakh from a suspected Bolero vehicle during a naka checking operation at Durga Chowmuhani in Kamalpur subdivision on Saturday night. Five people travelling in the vehicle were detained in connection with the incident.

According to police sources, the naka checking was being conducted at around 8 pm under the joint leadership of Kamalpur Traffic In-Charge Pankaj Debnath and Officer-in-Charge of Kamalpur Police Station Suman Acharya. During the operation, a private Bolero travelling from Dharmanagar towards Agartala, bearing registration number TR 01 CD 0692, was stopped after police found it suspicious.

A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of Rs 40 lakh in cash. The five detained persons are reportedly between 18 and 33 years of age.

During preliminary questioning, the detained individuals reportedly claimed that the money was related to a betel-nut business transaction. However, police reportedly found inconsistencies in their statements. As the five individuals are from different parts of the state and their explanations regarding the source of the money allegedly did not match, police have launched a detailed investigation.

The seized cash was counted using a machine in the presence of Kamalpur Sub-Divisional DCM Aditi Das, Kamalpur SDPO Sourav Das, police officer Kapil Pal, along with other police officials and sub-inspectors.

Police are now investigating the source of the cash, the identity of the person or business from which the money originated, and whether any larger network is connected to the incident.

Police sources further stated that the Rs 40 lakh and the five detained persons will be produced before the court tomorrow. Further details regarding the source of the money and the involvement of any other individuals are expected to emerge after completion of the investigation.
