Melaghar Police Destroys 65,000 Ganja Saplings in Major Anti-Narcotics Operation Under New OC Jayanta Das
Melaghar, Tripura – August 1, 2025 – In a massive crackdown on illegal narcotics cultivation, newly appointed Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Melaghar Police Station, Jayanta Das, led his first major operation on Friday, targeting large-scale cannabis cultivation in the Shivnagar Char area.
Having recently transferred from Birganj Police Station in Amarpur, OC Jayanta Das wasted no time in initiating a bold anti-drug campaign. Acting on a tip-off, he launched a well-coordinated raid at 10 AM with the support of a large contingent of Tripura State Rifles (TSR) personnel, Sub-Inspectors Subir Saha and Ram Kishan, and other police officers.
The operation targeted a remote government land (khas jomi) near the riverbanks of Shivnagar Char, where 12 to 14 illegal cannabis nursery plots had been developed discreetly. During the raid, police destroyed approximately 65,000 cannabis saplings, dealing a severe blow to narcotics cultivation in the region.
In an exclusive statement, OC Jayanta Das said, “Our fight against narcotics will continue relentlessly. Today’s operation is only the beginning. We are committed to eliminating illegal drug cultivation and trade from our jurisdiction.”
The operation is being widely appreciated by locals and is seen as a strong message against those involved in the drug trade. Authorities believe the destroyed plantations were part of a well-organized network aimed at producing cannabis on a commercial scale.
This successful raid has not only marked OC Jayanta Das’s dynamic entry into his new role but has also reignited hopes among residents for a safer, drug-free community.
