Tension Erupts in Kangpokpi After Detention of Six Villagers
Tension erupted in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district after protests over the alleged detention of six villagers from Kholen turned violent. Protesters reportedly blocked NH-2, damaged government vehicles and clashed with security forces, who used tear gas to disperse the crowd. The detained villagers were later released and the situation was brought under control.

Kangpokpi, Manipur: Tension escalated in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district late Saturday night after members of the Kuki community staged protests in Motbung and nearby areas over the alleged detention of six villagers from Kholen by security forces.
According to reports, the protest later turned violent, with demonstrators allegedly setting tyres on fire, pelting government vehicles with stones and digging trenches across National Highway-2, the key Imphal–Dimapur route. Heavy construction equipment was reportedly used to obstruct the highway and restrict the movement of security convoys.
Security personnel responded by firing tear-gas shells to disperse the crowd. Several protesters were reportedly injured during the confrontation and taken to nearby hospitals.
The protesters claimed that the detained individuals were village volunteers from Kholen, which is located near the Naga-dominated Chawangkining area. The area had reportedly witnessed attacks by armed miscreants in recent days.
The six detained villagers were subsequently released by the authorities. Officials later brought the situation under control, while security measures were strengthened in the affected areas.
The incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in parts of Manipur, where local disputes and security operations can quickly escalate into wider confrontations.
