JAMUI (BIHAR): In a major breakthrough, the Bihar Police shot and apprehended Nandan Yadav, the prime accused in the heinous harassment and molestation of a minor school student, during a police encounter in Jamui district on Tuesday.
According to senior police officials, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was tracking the absconding suspect near the Madwa Hill area under the Town Police Station limits. When surrounded by the police, the accused attempted to open fire and flee from the scene. In retaliatory firing, Nandan Yadav sustained a bullet injury to his leg and was immediately taken into custody. He was subsequently admitted to the Jamui Sadar Hospital for medical treatment under heavy police security. Another co-accused, identified as Hareram Yadav, was also apprehended during the police action.
The incident traces back to September 19, when two Class 10 students—a girl and her male classmate—were returning from tuition on a scooter. They were accosted, harassed, and subjected to brutal physical assault by a group of youths along the roadside.
The horror came to light after video footage of the incident went viral on social media platforms, sparking intense widespread outrage. The video captured the main accused, who had partially concealed his face with a printed scarf, violently grabbing and assaulting the minor girl while her companion attempted to shield her.
Prompted by public outrage, the Jamui Police formed a high-level team, traced the victims, recorded the girl's statement, and registered a case under stringent sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Speaking on the investigation, police officials confirmed that multiple suspects have been arrested so far, including minors involved in the crime and the individual responsible for circulating the video online. Additionally, law enforcement authorities have filed FIRs against over 100 social media handles for illegally sharing the clip and revealing the identity of the minor victim.
State authorities have assured that strict legal measures will be taken against all perpetrators involved in the incident to ensure swift justice. Further investigation into the matter remains underway.
