Shubman Gill's Historic Double Century Powers India to 587 on Day 2 at Edgbaston Edgbaston, Birmingham
Shubman Gill smashes a historic double century at Edgbaston, powering India to a massive total of 587 on Day 2 against England. A landmark innings in the heart of Birmingham.

India stamped their authority on the second Test against England at Edgbaston with a commanding batting performance, piling up a mammoth 587 runs in their first innings. The standout moment came from captain Shubman Gill, who crafted a sensational 269 — the highest ever score by an Indian Test captain — to put India firmly in control of the match.
Gill, showcasing immense maturity and class, became the first Asian captain to score a Test double-century in SENA countries (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia). His innings, laced with elegant drives and calm resilience, spanned over 9 hours and included 34 boundaries and 2 sixes.
The young skipper’s knock was supported by crucial contributions from Rishabh Pant (91) and Ravindra Jadeja (72), pushing India beyond the 550 mark by the second session on Day 2.
England’s bowlers toiled hard but had little success on a flat pitch. James Anderson and Ollie Robinson were among the wicket-takers, but none could find consistent breakthroughs.
In response, England ended Day 2 at 77/3, trailing by 510 runs. Indian pacers Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep struck early, removing Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, and Ben Duckett cheaply.
With momentum entirely in India's favour, England face an uphill task to avoid a follow-on and save the match.
