Neha Bora Among Protesters Detained at Jantar Mantar Demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation

New Delhi, September 25: All India Students’ Association (AISA) national president Neha Bora was among several activists and student leaders detained during a protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The demonstration was held against the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and alleged irregularities in the voter-list revision process. Protesters raised concerns over transparency and accountability in the functioning of the poll panel. These allegations remain disputed.

According to media reports, police erected barricades around Jantar Mantar and prevented protesters from entering the designated protest area. Delhi Police said the gathering did not have the required permission. At least 60 people, including Bora, activist Yogendra Yadav, social activist Anjali Bhardwaj, advocate Prashant Bhushan and CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya, were detained.

Bora and other activists criticised the police action and said their protest was aimed at raising questions about electoral rights and the functioning of the Election Commission. Reports said the detained protesters were taken to different police stations and later released.

The protest followed media reports about objections reportedly raised by two Election Commissioners over aspects of the SIR process. The Election Commission has said that differences of opinion are part of institutional deliberations and that its decisions were unanimous.

The demonstration reflects growing public and political debate over electoral-roll revisions, voter rights and accountability within the Election Commission.
