Tripura Women’s Commission Conducts Women’s Awareness Workshop in Karbook

Karbook, Gomati District | 25 August: The Tripura Women’s Commission conducted a women’s awareness workshop in Karbook on 25 August, in collaboration with the Karbook Cluster and Tirthamukh Cluster. The workshop focused on various issues related to women’s rights, domestic violence, legal protection, and awareness of available support mechanisms.

The programme was attended by SDMO Dhan Manik Tripura and Karbook Police Station Officer-in-Charge Johorlal Debbarma as special guests. The participation of officials from the health and police departments highlighted the importance of coordinated efforts to ensure the safety, dignity and rights of women.

During the workshop, participants were informed about the objectives and functions of the Tripura Women’s Commission, including examining violations of women’s rights, investigating complaints, recommending necessary legal measures, conducting social and legal awareness programmes, and providing assistance and counselling to women facing difficulties.

A major focus of the workshop was domestic violence and its different forms. Participants were educated about physical abuse, including beating, slapping, hitting, kicking, pushing and threats of physical harm.

The session also discussed sexual abuse, including behaviour that violates a woman’s dignity, forced sexual relations, forcing women to participate in obscene activities, and the sexual exploitation of children.

Another important topic was verbal and emotional abuse. The participants were made aware that insults, humiliation, character allegations, dowry-related harassment, threats against family members, forced marriage and preventing a woman from marrying a person of her choice can constitute forms of abuse.

The workshop also highlighted economic abuse, such as depriving women of household necessities, earnings, maintenance or stridhan, transferring or selling property without consent, preventing women from working, or taking away their income.

The Commission further explained provisions related to the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, including protection and residence orders, child custody, restrictions on the transfer of property, alternative accommodation and compensation for physical and mental injuries.

The programme also emphasized the importance of legal counselling and timely intervention in cases of domestic violence and other violations against women. Participants were encouraged to seek appropriate legal and administrative assistance rather than remain silent about abuse.

The Tripura Women’s Commission also shared its contact information so that women facing violence, harassment or rights violations can approach the Commission for assistance.
