Pentagon Review Could Reshape U.S. Military Presence Across Europe

Washington, August 27, 2026: The United States is preparing several possible options for the future deployment of its military forces in Europe as the Pentagon conducts a major review of its troop presence and overseas bases.

The review, expected to be completed by December, is reportedly examining different levels and locations of U.S. forces, with multiple options expected to be presented to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth before the final deadline.

The assessment is also looking beyond troop numbers. Access to military bases, overflight rights, intelligence infrastructure, cyber and space capabilities, as well as the ability of NATO allies to contribute to collective defence, are expected to play an important role in the evaluation.

The possibility of a reduced U.S. military footprint has raised concerns among some European allies, particularly amid growing pressure from Washington for NATO members to take greater responsibility for regional security and increase defence contributions.

The Pentagon, however, has indicated that the review is intended to examine a broad range of possibilities rather than predetermine a specific outcome. Officials say the process will consider both maintaining current force levels and potential reductions or changes in the deployment of U.S. troops.

The development could become an important test of the future balance of responsibilities within NATO, as Washington seeks greater contributions from European allies while reassessing how U.S. military resources are positioned across the continent.
