BIG BREAKING: BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT to Contest Tripura Village Committee Elections Together

Agartala, September 5, 2026: In a major political development ahead of the Tripura Village Committee elections, Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha has announced that the BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT will jointly contest the upcoming Village Committee elections.

Speaking to reporters at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport in Agartala after returning from New Delhi, Chief Minister Manik Saha said an important decision was taken during his meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Tipra Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma in New Delhi.

According to the Chief Minister, the three parties, which are partners in the ruling alliance, have decided to fight the September 28 Village Committee elections together. A detailed seat-sharing arrangement and candidate selection process will be worked out shortly, with representatives of the parties expected to coordinate on the final formula.

The announcement comes a day after the nearly 90-minute meeting between Amit Shah, Manik Saha, Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma and BJP Northeast Coordinator Sambit Patra in New Delhi. The implementation of the Tripartite Accord, along with issues concerning indigenous people, land rights and the future of the TTAADC, was also discussed during the meeting.

Tripartite Accord to Move Forward After Elections

Speaking about the Tripartite Accord, Chief Minister Manik Saha said that the pending issues would be addressed in a time-bound manner after the Village Committee elections. He indicated that the implementation process would move forward after the polls and that the concerned parties have already formed teams to coordinate the process.

The development is significant for Tipra Motha, which has repeatedly demanded concrete progress on issues related to indigenous land rights, constitutional safeguards and greater powers for the tribal council.

The possibility of direct financial support and greater financial autonomy for the TTAADC has also emerged as an important issue in the ongoing discussions, although the precise mechanism and details will become clearer after the formal process and paperwork are completed.

Major Political Shift Ahead of Village Committee Polls

The decision marks a significant political development ahead of the Village Committee elections. The BJP and Tipra Motha had contested the 2026 TTAADC elections separately, but the three NDA partners are now set to jointly contest the grassroots-level Village Committee polls.

Elections to 587 Village Committees covering 4,597 seats are scheduled for September 28, while counting will take place on October 5. The elections are being held after a gap of nearly a decade.

With the BJP, Tipra Motha and IPFT now preparing to contest the polls together, the political equation in Tripura's tribal areas is set for a major change. The implementation of the Tripartite Accord and progress on indigenous land rights are likely to remain closely watched in the period following the elections.
