Agartala, Tripura | October 10, 2026: Members of the media fraternity staged a road blockade in the GB area of Agartala, demanding the immediate arrest of individuals allegedly involved in an attack on journalists. The protest reflected growing concern among media workers over their safety and the need for prompt action by law enforcement authorities against those accused of targeting members of the press.

According to reports, the incident involved journalists Chandan Dey, Shivananda Shil and Ajay Das. Following the alleged attack, members of the journalist community came together to express their strong objection and demand justice for the affected media personnel.

During the demonstration, journalists sat on the road and raised their voices against the alleged assault. They urged the police administration to take the matter seriously, conduct an appropriate investigation and ensure that those responsible were brought to justice in accordance with the law.

The protesters also issued a clear warning to the authorities, demanding that the accused be arrested within 48 hours. They stated that failure to meet the demand within the stipulated period could compel the entire journalist community to launch a larger agitation. The warning underlined the seriousness with which the media fraternity viewed the incident.

The journalists emphasised that members of the press play an important role in informing the public, highlighting people's grievances and reporting issues of public interest. They argued that media personnel must be able to perform their professional duties without fear of physical attacks, intimidation or threats. Any alleged violence against journalists, they maintained, requires an appropriate response from the authorities.

The road blockade brought attention to the concerns raised by the protesting journalists and placed pressure on the police administration to respond to their demands. The demonstration was associated with the Tripura Electronic Media Society (TEMS), whose president has been identified in reports as Pranab Sarkar.

During discussions with the protesters, Additional Superintendent of Police Dhruva Nath reportedly assured the journalists that the accused would be arrested within 48 hours. Following the assurance from the police, the protesting media personnel decided to withdraw the road blockade, bringing the immediate demonstration to an end.

However, the withdrawal of the blockade does not necessarily mean that the matter has been resolved. The journalists have made it clear that they expect concrete action from the police within the promised timeframe. They have also warned that a larger protest could follow if their demand is not fulfilled.

The incident has once again brought the safety of journalists and the protection of press freedom into focus in Tripura. Media organisations and journalists expect law enforcement agencies to investigate allegations of attacks on media workers fairly and take appropriate legal action wherever responsibility is established.

As the 48-hour deadline approaches, attention remains focused on the police administration and the next steps in the case. The response of the authorities will be crucial in addressing the concerns of the journalist community and restoring confidence that media personnel can carry out their responsibilities safely.
