Life Imprisonment for Nuru Nabi in Sonamura Rape Case

Sepahijala District and Sessions Court sentenced Nuru Nabi to life imprisonment for raping a woman in Sonamura subdivision in 2019. The accused was also given five years of rigorous imprisonment under IPC Section 457 and fines under both Sections 457 and 376. The case was investigated by Kalamchaura Police, and after testimonies from 18 witnesses, the court declared him guilty. Public Prosecutor Gautam Giri welcomed the verdict.

Sonamura, Aug 19: In a significant verdict, the Sepahijala District and Sessions Court today sentenced accused Nuru Nabi to life imprisonment in connection with a rape case that took place in Sonamura subdivision.

Delivering the judgment, Hon’ble District and Sessions Judge Shankari Das held the accused guilty of forcibly raping a woman in the absence of her husband. The court pronounced punishment under two separate sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Under Section 457 IPC, Nabi was awarded five years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹2,000, with an additional 15 days’ imprisonment in default of payment. Under Section 376 IPC, the accused was sentenced to life imprisonment with rigorous punishment along with a fine of ₹5,000, and in case of non-payment, an additional two months’ imprisonment.

The incident occurred on 19 May 2019 in the Kalamchaura police station area. Following the victim’s complaint, a case was registered on 20 May 2019 by then OC Rajib Saha, while Durga Kumar Rangkhal served as the Investigating Officer.

During the trial, the court examined around 18 witnesses before reaching the verdict. After hearing arguments from both sides, the judge found Nabi guilty and announced the sentence on Monday.

Speaking on the judgment, Public Prosecutor Gautam Giri expressed satisfaction, noting that the verdict delivered justice to the survivor after a long legal battle.
