UJJAIN, MADHYA PRADESH: A mishap occurred at Ujjain’s Shahi Masjid on Thursday morning when a section of a minaret fell onto the mosque’s roof during an ongoing dismantling operation.

According to reports, the portion of the minaret was being removed as part of work related to the proposed widening of the Kanthal–Gopal Mandir road, being undertaken ahead of the Simhastha 2028 preparations. The removal work was being carried out with the involvement of members of the mosque community and administrative support.

During the operation, a strap or belt used in the lifting equipment reportedly broke, causing a section of the minaret to fall onto the structure below. The impact damaged part of the mosque’s roof.

Officials and members of the mosque committee reached the site following the incident. No deaths or injuries have been reported, and workers who were on the scaffolding were reported to be safe. Ujjain Collector Raushan Kumar Singh also appealed to people not to pay attention to rumours circulating about the incident.

The administration has begun repair work on the damaged portion and is monitoring the situation at the site. As a precautionary measure, movement within approximately 500 metres of the location has been restricted, with barricading and police deployment in place.

The incident comes amid heightened sensitivity surrounding the Shahi Masjid after protests and clashes were reported in Ujjain on September 28 over the proposed removal of a portion of the structure for road widening. Authorities have urged the public to rely on verified information and maintain peace.
