The shutdown at Tezpur University has entered its sixth day as students, faculty, and staff reject Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s proposal to appoint a pro-vice-chancellor. The Joint Action Forum maintains its demands for the suspension of current VC Shambhu Nath Singh, appointment of an acting VC instead of a pro-VC, and release of all inquiry reports. The forum questioned the CM’s “sudden” intervention, suggesting political motives. Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi accused the CM of shielding the VC. While partial relaxation has been allowed for essential work, both TUTA and TUNTEA continue supporting the agitation. The VC has stayed away from campus since September 22 following a confrontation with students.

Drone Strikes Hit ULFA-I Camps Along India-Myanmar Border, Top Leaders Reported Killed

On July 13, 2025, ULFA-Independent (ULFA-I) alleged that the Indian Army launched a massive drone strike on its camps across the India-Myanmar border between 2 AM and 4 AM. Over 150 drones, reportedly of Israeli and French origin, were used in attacks stretching from Longwa (Nagaland) to Pangsai Pass (Arunachal Pradesh). ULFA-I claimed key leaders, including Lt. Gen. Nayan Medhi (alias Nayan Asom), Brig. Ganesh Asom, and Col. Pradip Asom were killed, with 19 others injured. The latter two reportedly died during a secondary missile strike at Nayan Asom’s funeral.

There is no official confirmation from the Indian Army, although sources suggest possible strikes on insurgent camps in Myanmar, including those of ULFA-I, NSCN-K, and PLA. This marks the second such reported drone attack after a similar allegation in January 2024. ULFA-I continues to reject peace talks without discussions on Assam’s sovereignty.
